Weight Watchers 2018 Recipes

Weight Watchers 2018 Recipes

Starting a new healthy eating plan can be daunting—especially when you're on the hunt for recipes that are nutritious, simple to make and actually tasty. But once you do find those magical meals, things get a whole lot easier.

And that's exactly what happened with the participants in our fourth annual Woman's Day Live Longer & Stronger Challenge. The five woman all discovered recipes—with help from Joy Bauer, RDN, and her team of nutrition professionals—that seamlessly fit into their lives, and made them realize that they might enjoy eating healthy for the long haul.

"It's key to have four or five go-to recipes, and to keep the ingredients for these dishes on hand so you're always prepared no matter what life throws at you— everyone can relate to daily chaos!" says Bauer. "And remember, they don't have to be gourmet meals—in many cases, all it takes is 10 to 15 minutes and a few simple ingredients to whip up a healthy and delish dinner."

Read on to see what recipe had the single biggest impact for each of the women—they've all lost at least 25 pounds and improved their heart-health. Who knows—maybe one of these recipes might become your new favorite, too.

Jacqueline Gilmore-Jackson, 47 | Wilmington, North Carolina

The Recipe: Baked Salmon and Sautéed Spinach from Joy Bauer

Food, Citrus, Ingredient, Produce, Plate, Dishware, Tableware, Orange, Leaf vegetable, Garnish,

Allie12 Getty Images

Why it works for me: "I've always enjoyed salmon, but I used to pair it with a starchy side. The sautéed spinach was a great change from rice and potatoes; it's low in calories, so I get to enjoy larger portions without the extra calories. Sometimes I switch it up and add mushrooms, onions, and green peppers to the sautéed spinach. It's very flavorful, and I eat it at least three times a week."

The family feedback: "I've prepared the Baked Salmon and Sautéed Spinach for my son, and he enjoys it as well. It makes me feel good preparing healthier meals for us. Plus, the meal makes us feel satisfied, and not stuffed."

*Jacqueline has lost 45 pounds so far, and has worked up to taking 15,000 steps a day (and sometimes more on the weekends!).

Amber Duncan, 37 | Gladstone, Oregon

The Recipe: Frozen Hot Chocolate from Joy Bauer

Brown, Peach, Liquid, Ingredient, Beige, Tan, Lavender, Fawn, Party favor, Mason jar,

Carolyn Ann Ryan Getty Images

Why it works for me: "This recipe was a game changer because I am a huge chocoholic. I knew that if I was going to be successful on this plan, I was going to have to find a way to incorporate occasional chocolate treats without throwing my calories completely out of whack. I also knew that I wanted to find a way to indulge with my family so that we could all be enjoying the same thing. This recipe helped because I could relish a dessert right along with them."

The family feedback: "My family said it was delicious! My kids seemed to enjoy it as much or more than a milkshake. Since it is so fast to make and requires so few ingredients—just chocolate syrup, fat free evaporated milk, vanilla extract and ice—it's easy to prepare for any last minute celebrations."

*Amber has lost 35 pounds so far, and improved her marathon time by 26 minutes since starting the challenge.

Maryellen Farmer, 56 | Ocean Springs, Mississippi

The Recipe: Chicken Enchiladas from Joy Bauer

Food, Cuisine, Ingredient, Dish, Recipe, Dessert, Comfort food, Breakfast, Meal, Bowl,

Robert Linton Getty Images

Why it works for me: "The recipe is super easy and so full of flavor. I put the chicken in the slow cooker before work, and it's ready as soon as I got home. All the seasonings make the taste pop in your mouth!"

The family feedback: "We all love Mexican food, but calories are usually high for the dishes I used to enjoy, so finding this recipe was really a wonderful addition to my weight-loss arsenal. My son and husband love it as well, so it's a real winner all around."

*Maryellen has lost 25 pounds so far; she's been taking control of her health after her heart attack in 2013.

Vanitta Bumpers, 46 | Crestview, Florida

The Recipe: Baked Tilapia and Sautéed Spinach from Joy Bauer

Food, Ingredient, Cuisine, Dishware, Fines herbes, Garnish, Dish, Recipe, Plate, Meat,

Alle12 Getty Images

Why it works for me: "My favorite recipe is the baked salmon with spinach, however, the recipe gives you the option of substituting cod, halibut, or tilapia, and I prefer to use tilapia. This recipe helps me stick to my diet because it's really delicious and very healthy—and the entire meal is 317 calories. I also choose a combination of salt-free seasonings for the recipe, including garlic powder, onion powder, and any salt-free blends of Mrs. Dash and McCormick Perfect Pinch."

The family feedback: "I've made the tilapia for my family a few times and they loved it! They were surprised at how flavorful it tasted without using salt. I typically eat this recipe for dinner throughout the week as well as on weekends."

*Vanitta has lost 40 pounds so far; she loves getting her steps in every day—and making healthy appetizers to serve at parties.

Melanie McShane, 45 | Arcadia, California

The Recipe: Turkey Sausage with Sautéed Peppers and Onions from Joy Bauer

Food, Ingredient, Dishware, Meat, Cuisine, Tableware, Produce, Serveware, Dish, Recipe,

Courtesy of Joy Bauer

Why it works for me: "One of the very first questions that I asked when we started the Live Longer and Stronger Challenge was, 'How do I stay on a diet and not think about food all the time?' I have done other plans, and the entire time I was on the plan, I felt like my whole life was being lived simply to count points. Or, other plans provided set meals, so my husband and son had to make their own food—or buy it from a restaurant. It placed all my attention on food. So, long story short, I love that I can make food that is easy to prepare, tastes good, and my whole family can eat it. By having a handful of easy recipes, including this turkey sausage with peppers and onions, that are quick and healthy, I don't have to obsess about food."

The family feedback: "My son is 9, so he is at that stage where he is still a little bit picky. It seems that he doesn't like complicated foods—so this recipe is perfect for us. And because it's easy, he actually has fun cooking with me."

*Melanie has lost 30 pounds so far, and has been able to reduce her blood pressure medication.

How to Start an Art Collection

CC0/Free-Photos/Pixabay

Whether you consider it an investment, a hobby or just a cool way to decorate the walls in your home, acquiring new art can be a fun and exhilarating experience. Although many people assume collecting art is only for millionaires, the truth is you can start your own art collection on any budget. You may not have the funds to fill it with famous pieces, but all that matters is that you fill it with pieces you love.

Know What You Like

First, only collect what you like, even if it's something obscure that others may not appreciate or understand. Unless you're just trying to make a quick buck — and that's often hard to do — putting together a collection won't be fun if you force yourself to choose items just because they're trendy. If you aren't sure what you love, go to the library and check out some art history books. Go to art galleries in your community, and check out the artisan booths at local fairs and festivals. Do a simple internet search, visit an antique store or flip through the art at your local craft store or big box store. Figure out what appeals to you, and use that as a starting point.

Know Where to Look

The next step is knowing where to find the art you like. Some of the places you visit to discover your taste may also sell the types of pieces you like. Craft fairs, festivals, antique shops and galleries are good examples, but you can shop for art at many other places, including estate sales, where you may find rare and unique pieces, and art websites like Etsy, ArtStar, Uprise Art and Editioned Art. Some artists allow you to visit their studios, and auction houses typically have art in their inventories. If you go to auctions outside of major cities, you may even find a rare piece at an excellent price.

Do Your Homework

Before you make a purchase, especially an expensive purchase, you want to do your homework on the artist, the item and its background before signing on the dotted line. In some cases, the seller may not realize the value of an item and sell it for a bargain price, but you don't want to pay too much for a piece, even if you love it. You also want to avoid buying something advertised as an authentic piece that is actually just a reproduction. Be on the lookout for fraudulent items, and learn how to read the documentation that verifies the authenticity and provenance of a piece of art.

Take It Slow

If you know your budget for starting an art collection, don't rush out and spend it all in one day. Don't expect to put together a huge, envious collection overnight. It takes time to curate the perfect collection for your interests, tastes and passions. For many art collectors, the hobby becomes a lifelong journey. You never know when a new artist you discover turns into a huge success, making that $100 painting you bought worth a small fortune — and bragging rights — one day. Starting slow also allows you to save up for the more expensive pieces you may want to buy one day.

Treat Your Art Well

Finally, after you purchase your first pieces, make sure you take care of them. Learn how to display and preserve everything you buy, and make sure you have plenty of space to keep your art. Sure, you could rent a storage building if you don't have enough room in your home for all your treasures, but what's the point in having an awesome collection if you can't show it off? If you acquire expensive pieces, insure them against theft and disasters. You may also want to make a plan for what happens to your art after you pass away. If you don't have family, you may want to donate art to a museum or charity, for example.

Jetsons Living Room

Jetsons Living Room

I've been considering recreating a fictional room for a while, I just wasn't sure which show to use as my inspiration. I considered iCarly, Drake & Josh, That's So Raven, but ultimately decided it would be the most fun to do it with a cartoon. And what better cartoon to use than The Jetsons? I've been really into the whole retro-meets-modern style in my own place lately, and I think the style and architecture in the Jetsons is pretty much spot-on.

So I studied pictures of the living room and dining room from the show. Then I took to the internet to find real-life furniture that looks as close to possible to their cartoon counterparts.

The furniture in this post won't be as accessible as the rest of the content on this blog. Because surprisingly, or maybe not so surprisingly, this furniture was pretty hard to find since it was so specific.

So I will not be running out to buy this stuff anytime soon, but it was super fun to try to reimagine the cartoon world in the real world.

I drew up some mock-ups of the rooms. The architectural aspects of the room are drawn, but the fixtures are all real pieces that you can check out online. So enjoy, and I hope you take some real inspiration for your own place, I know I did!

Woodhouse and Law

We commissioned by a musician and her family to design the interiors of their country house. The design team worked in collaboration with the client and her husband throughout the programme of works, which included the addition of a contemporary glass extension to a period building. The house is nestled within the Somerset countryside and large expanses of glass help connect the house to the landscape beyond. The design team took material and colour references from the surroundings, including the large natural timber dining table and the forest green accent colours that feature throughout the property. The result is a great combination of intimate rooms and spacious, light filled spaces in which to live, socialise and be creative.

How to Decorate a Small Living Room

Every small living space offers design challenges. While it's important to make all of the rooms in your home functional, the living room is especially key because many people spend a lot of their time at home in the living room. From selecting furniture that is an appropriate scale for the space to maximizing hidden storage solutions to strategically placing a mirror to add depth and light, there are an extensive range of practical and easily attainable design ideas that will help you create the living room of your dreams in your small space.

6 Small Living Room Ideas

1. Select Furniture to Fit the Existing Space

2. Consider Hidden Storage

3. Create a Focal Point

4. Add Light and Depth

5. Don't Be Afraid of Color

6. Take Advantage of Vertical Space

The trunk serves as a coffee table and storage piece while adding a funky vintage touch to the living room.

1. Select Furniture to Fit the Existing Space

  • Determine Scale and Configuration

When you're working with a compact living room, large-scale furniture often isn't an option. Be realistic about the space. For example, if an oversized recliner won't fit, choose a pair of smaller chairs. Many people also get hung up on common furniture configurations. For example, nothing says that you need a full-sized sofa in your living room. A love seat paired with a bench and an armchair may work more naturally in your space.

  • Think Multifunctional

Choosing multifunctional pieces will also make the most of your living room. For example, a bench with storage will provide seating while housing pillows and blankets. A coffee table or console table makes a great addition to a living room but only when it makes sense for the space. Your small living room may be better suited for two small tables that open up the space and can be moved as needed to accommodate different functions.

  • Consider Floating Furniture and Low Seating

Floating furniture and low seating can make all the difference when it comes to keeping the space open and flowing. Design a floating furniture arrangement in the center of the room instead of pushing pieces up against the walls. Install shelves and other built-in components off the floor to create the illusion of space. If you choose low seating, select pieces that don't distract from the focal statement in the room. For example, a pair of low stools in front of the mantel will keep the fireplace as the focus of the living room.

The wall length built-in keeps this narrow living room streamlined and clutter free.

Concealed storage is a great way to house items in the living room without creating a cluttered space. Furniture pieces that boast concealed storage, such as an ottoman with built-in storage, are a great option. You may also want to consider decor pieces that do double duty as storage, such as colorful baskets or jars. Do you have a hard time finding concealed storage pieces that don't take up a ton of floor space? Think about biting the bullet and devoting a single wall to built-in storage. To further streamline the storage, keep your items in the built-in hidden behind doors or curtains.

3. Create a Focal Point

A focal point is ideal for drawing people into a space while making it more uplifting and even sophisticated. Think about focusing your living room around a fireplace, sofa, coffee table, artwork, or mirror. Once you've settled on your focal point, design the rest of the living room around your statement piece to pull the entire look together.

The mirrors reflect the whole space, making it appear larger, while bringing more natural light into the room.

4. Add Light and Depth

Small living rooms with flat features and dark corners look dreary, even when they boast unique furniture and wall hangings. Maximize the natural light in the room, and don't be afraid to add artificial light sources as well. You'll bring even more light and depth into your compact living room with wallpaper and strategically placed mirrors and plants. Purely decorative mirrors still pack a visual punch and draw extra light into the space.

The floral theme ties the colored items in the room together.

5. Don't Be Afraid of Color

Many people steer clear of color in small living rooms, believing that it will overwhelm the space. While there is nothing wrong with designing a small living room that features neutral shades, color can make the space appear larger. Select a color scheme with a maximum of three shades to create a unified aesthetic. If you want to use additional colors, incorporate them as accents. Typically lighter shades make a space look larger, but careful use of darker shades takes the style and drama in the room up a notch.

When you paint a small living room, select a satin or semigloss finish to reflect the light. If you want to tie the color scheme in the room together without painting or buying new furniture, consider an area rug. Layer a rug over carpeting to make the room feel cozier or conceal dark flooring with a brightly colored rug to lighten up a dark space.

This set of floating shelves draw the eye up while adding room for knick knacks in otherwise wasted corner space.

This set of floating shelves draw the eye up while adding room for knick knacks in otherwise wasted corner space.

6. Take Advantage of Vertical Space

Build up instead of out to maximize the available space. When you hang curtains, place the curtain rods right below the ceiling. Then choose curtains that extend all the way to the floor to make the ceiling look higher. If you're selecting art or other wall hangings, consider designing a gallery wall or choosing a few large pieces that fill the whole space. Do you have an odd nook that currently serves little or no purpose in the living room? Think about constructing shelves to simultaneously add storage and draw the eye upward.

Small Family Room Design

Finally, creating the ideal flow for your small living room is an ongoing process. It often takes weeks, or even months, of living with a living room arrangement to determine what is and isn't working. Don't be afraid to keep making tweaks and adjusting the layout until you find a arrangement that suits you and your family.

New owner takes Gracious Home out of bankruptcy

James Messerschmidt

Gracious Home has a new lease on life.

The twice-bankrupt home goods retailer has emerged from its latest trip through Chapter 11 with plans to become the Warby Parker of bed linens and lighting — that is, to use its brick-and-mortar locations solely for showrooming its products.

The once-hot chain financed its exit from Chapter 11 with $4 million from Tom Sullivan, the founder of Lumber Liquidators, who bought the upscale home goods store out of bankruptcy.

A Manhattan Bankruptcy Court judge approved the sale late Thursday.

Sullivan, the only bidder for the chain, paid off a $3 million loan from JMB Capital Partners that allowed Gracious Home to acquire new inventory while it was reorganizing.

"Tom is famous for buying distressed companies," said Gracious Home chief executive Robert Morrison, a former senior vice president of Lumber Liquidators, who helped Sullivan take his old company public and reached out to him earlier this year.

"The timing wasn't right as he was exiting Lumber Liquidators at the time, but we began talking again in May," said Morrison, who will continue to head up Gracious Home.

The chain closed three of its four stores last year, retaining just its Upper East Side location.

With fresh capital and a new online focus, Morrison hopes to open about six stores in major cities like Miami, San Francisco and Washington, DC, he said, adding that the stores would be similar to the Warby Parker showroom model.

"The important thing is to remain nimble and to have small stores that don't need a lot of inventory," Morrison said.

The 54-year-old chain, which had sold everything from silk pillows and chandeliers to furniture polish and Lysol, is now focusing on lighting and bed and bath linens. A set of sheets costs about $500 while floor lamps and sconces run between $400 and $1,400 a pop.

Sullivan stepped away from Lumber Liquidators this year after serving as interim CEO during a much-publicized crisis over reports that its laminate flooring contained elevated levels of formaldehyde, which made some consumers ill and resulted in numerous lawsuits.

A serial entrepreneur, Sullivan also owns Cabinets To Go, a 54-store chain he founded in 2008.

"Tom will be very helpful," Morrison said. "He's a real American success story."
